It’s not dumb, it’s just that the file format is not supported by Windows Media Player. Right click the flie, and select properties. If it’s not wav, mp3 or wma, chances are it won’t work.

Do a clean up on your comp, go to start, then all programs then accessories and then system tools and do a disc cleanup and also do disc defragmenter. when the disc clean up finishes its scan make sure all the boxes are checked and then click continue. then when the defragmenter opens just click defragment.. then also go to control panel and add/remove programs and then remove everything you dont need and it will make things a lot faster.

the disc clean up and defragmenter will make your comp really slow and if you rarely do this it will probably take awhile so turn it on then go take a shower or something cause its tedious to sit and watch. dont try to delete programs and do the clean up at the same time, wont work.

you also might want to look into upgrading your ram. also make sure your media player is up to date and you have the latest version.

Good luck, you can email me if you have any more questions on cleaning it up.

If your computer normally works ok and is not particularly slow, it might just be that a particular program has become “hung” where it gets confused and trapped in an endless loop. This can use up 100% of your CPU (processor) which then causes all other programs to get stacked up waiting for their chance to be ‘processed’.

If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del this will open Windows Task Manager and the amount of CPU Usage is shown at the bottom of the window. Click on the Processes tab and click on the column heading “CPU” twice. Apart from System Idle Process, the one with the highest CPU number is the one at fault and it can usually be closed by highlighting it and clicking End Process. Alternatively, restarting the computer will clear it.

Windows Media Player is notoriously poor at playing different types of file format. Try VLC instead. It’s free and plays just about anything.
